Volunteer Spotlight: Joe Kessler

By August 22, 2024Tiger Team, Volunteer

The over 100 members of the Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity Tiger Team are known for generously giving their time, but they also give their talents! This group of committed volunteers support the mission not only by helping lead daily volunteers in the efforts on site, helping build homes and advocate in our community for affordable housing, but they also work on very special projects off-site. One of those remarkable craftspeople is the Tiger Team’s very own, Joe.

Before becoming a Tiger in the fall of 2022, Joe’s career was primarily in health care serving as the CFO of various hospital and healthcare organizations. From Ohio to New York to Indianapolis, Joe has been instrumental in heading up finance, construction, human resources and information systems.

In 2023, the construction department shifted from using semi-trailers on site for housing tools and materials on job sites to utilizing cargo trailers – a much smaller space to accommodate for equal amounts of work! This presented a challenge to the team in figuring out how we were going to efficiently use that space. We wanted to ensure we could continue to carry all the tools and materials necessary to build a high-quality home and foster the best volunteer experience possible.

Tiger Joe answered the call! As a remarkable woodworker and cabinet builder, Joe crafted a beautiful design and lead an entire build-out of not only one cargo trailer – but THREE cargo trailers. He spent countless hours hard at work in the construction warehouse and in his own driveway. In the winter of 2024 Joe did another round of renovations and re-design, enlisting a small group of Tiger teammates to help him in building out those trailers to be even more efficient and effective on site.

In 2022, Joe was voted as the Cub of the Year by the construction staff and his Tiger peers (Cubs are first-year members of the Tiger Team). This is a huge testament to the impact Joe has made in a very short time and continues to build upon each day serving with Indy Habitat. We are so grateful for Joe’s continued dedication to the mission of Indy Habitat, for sharing his remarkable talents with us, and for always leading by example by putting the mission above all else.
