How Can You Support Habitat

As a real estate agent, you guide families toward homeownership. By partnering with Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity, you can extend that mission by supporting affordable homeownership opportunities for those who need it most. 

Below, you’ll find resources to understand Habitat’s work, share information with clients, and showcase your partnership. Whether you donate as a closing gift, contribute to closing costs, or spread awareness, getting involved is simple.

  • Refer a Homebuyer

    If you have a first-time homebuyer facing challenges with a traditional mortgage, refer them to our program. They can start by requesting and completing the online info session video—and be sure they list your name on the form when requesting the video. After completing the video, they will receive an application.

  • Closing Gift Contribution

    Celebrate a family’s new home by donating to Habitat in their honor. This meaningful gesture helps another family achieve homeownership. 

  • Spread Awareness

    Share Habitat’s mission with your clients and network to inspire others to support affordable housing solutions in our community. 

  • Social Media & Marketing Support

    Use our ready-to-share graphics and messaging to showcase your partnership with Habitat and encourage other real estate professionals to get involved. 

Claim a tax credit when you donate to Habitat

The Indiana state government recently passed the Attainable Homeownership Tax Credit, a $4 million program designed to incentivize individuals and businesses to contribute to Habitat affiliates. This program is a significant recognition of the growing need for more affordable homeownership options in our community.  

How does it work? 

Tax credits may be used to reduce your individual or business state tax liability in the tax year the donation is made. When you donate to Habitat, you can receive a tax credit worth 50% of your donation, up to $10,000 in tax credits. This means that a donation of $2,000 could result in a $1,000 tax credit for you or your small business. There are specific steps you need to take to claim the tax credits. Myth: Habitat for Humanity gives away homes for free.

Fact: Buyers must have a stable income and meet financial guidelines. 

Myth: Habitat builds homes and sells them for profit.
Fact: Habitat builds and sells houses to homeowner partners through no-profit loans. Mortgage payments recycle into future home builds. 

Myth: Habitat homes decrease neighborhood property values.
Fact: Studies show Habitat homes stabilize neighborhoods and increase value. 

Myth: Anyone can qualify for a Habitat home.
Fact: Homebuyers must meet specific eligibility criteria, including an ability to purchase and pay an affordable mortgage, a need for improved housing, and a willingness to partner with Habitat through required partnership hours.

Can I promote my support for Habitat to my clients?

Yes. We provide marketing materials, social media graphics, and sample messaging to help you share your commitment to affordable homeownership. You can also rally your network by fundraising or joining us on the build site with a personalized donation page. 

Will my client receive any acknowledgment for the donation made in their honor?

You will receive the official acknowledgment for tax purposes. Habitat can also provide a thank you message or certificate for your client at closing. 

How can I explain Habitat’s mission to my clients?

Habitat partners with families who purchase their homes with an affordable mortgages and complete required partnership hours. Together, we create strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership. 

How else can I support Habitat beyond closing gifts?

There are a variety of ways to get involved in our mission. Refer homebuyers to our program, volunteer on the build site, use your donation page to fundraise, attend Habitat events, or encourage clients to shop and donate household items to any of our four ReStore locations.
