Breaking Into Sports Reporting: Meet Kamelah

Kamelah is a freshman at Ball State University studying Sports Reporting.

Just weeks into her collegiate journey, she is excited to step out of her comfort zone and build a full life on campus. Looking to learn more about social media and public relations, Kamelah is pursuing a career in women’s sports – specifically basketball. She wants to gain experience in front of and behind the camera. Kamelah imagines herself working as a news anchor for ESPN and different sports teams.

Even before college, Kamelah was making a name for herself. She was actively involved at her high school as a member of the cheer team. With her team, she volunteered at family shelters during the holiday seasons and participated in marathons for causes she cared about. She also takes pride in being the youngest graduate in her class!

Outside of school, Kamelah is also an entrepreneur. In high school, she created Kam’s Kookies, where she uses her love for cooking to sell baked goods.

Now on her own at school, she is eager to be more independent. But she is happy she has her home to come back to. When the Bledsoe family moved into their Habitat home in 2023, Kamelah’s new space of her own helped her stay on top of her schoolwork.

Since being in their home, the Bledsoes take the title of being the “family house.” She loves having the space and freedom for her cousins to visit anytime, not just on special occasions. The first Christmas in their new home is one of Kamelah’s favorite memories. She described it as a “wholesome feeling,” having all her family together opening presents. They now make sure they schedule family dinners to celebrate their wins. The most recent dinner was to celebrate Kamelah receiving the scholarship from Habitat.

Kamelah is confident to start this season in her life, and a lot of that confidence comes from her role model – her mom. “My siblings and I are always watching her be resilient and determined. Any goal she has, she makes it happen.” Kamelah speaks positively of the effects homeownership had on her mom. She notices that she now has more freedom financially to live for herself and do things like travel.

With this scholarship program, Kamelah now has additional support to grow in her education and career. We are proud to stand behind her as she steps into her future.
