The Home That Helped Shape Jamilah’s Future
Jamilah is a sophomore studying psychology at Indiana University Bloomington.
When Jamilah was 15, she watched her family’s future take shape as her mother became a Habitat homeowner. She remembers driving by their home during construction, attending build events with her mother, and seeing the house gradually come together. Even while facing health challenges and preparing for surgery, Jamilah’s mother remained determined to achieve homeownership, a commitment that left a lasting impression on her daughter.
Before moving into their home, Jamilah’s family had always lived in apartments. Stepping into a space that was truly their own felt different. She remembers decorating the house, settling in, and experiencing something many families dream of: stability and a place to call home. The new home also brought practical benefits. Living closer to school made daily life easier and gave Jamilah greater independence as she navigated high school.
I really want to work with kids,” Jamilah shared, explaining that her goal is to be a therapist focused on supporting young people’s mental health and “be someone they can trust and turn to.”
Now a sophomore studying psychology at Indiana University Bloomington, Jamilah plans to pursue a career helping children through therapy and social work. Looking back, she can see how affordable homeownership created opportunities that extended far beyond housing. The financial stability of owning a home allowed her family to enjoy experiences they had not been able to before, from hosting family gatherings to taking vacations and participating more fully in their community.
This scholarship, combined with Jamilah’s work-study position on campus, will help fund this year’s tuition costs. Jamilah’s story reflects the purpose of this scholarship program. Affordable homeownership creates a foundation for families, and that foundation can open doors educational achievement for generations to come.
