Habitat University

The Habitat homeownership program (Habitat University) includes financial counseling and home maintenance education that gives buyers the tools to be successful in this life-changing endeavor.

Accepted applicants invest 200 hours of “sweat equity” by completing Habitat U classes and volunteering on Habitat homes. Homebuyers then purchase their home with the responsibility of an affordable interest, monthly mortgage payments, and home maintenance.

Steps of the Program

Eligibility

We look for three things when determining eligible applicants: need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner. A family with these three things must complete the online information session and application.

Habitat University Courses

Complete and graduate from Habitat University’s financial and home maintenance courses.

Sweat Equity Hours

Work alongside sponsors and volunteers to complete 200 sweat equity hours by working on the build site of their own home and others or through volunteering at the ReStore.

Purchase

The home is sold to the family via a long-term, affordable interest mortgage.

Value

The family then owns a decent home that meets their needs and pays affordable monthly mortgage payments that goes into a revolving fund that is used to build homes for more families.

Application Guidelines

  1. After the homeownership info session, you will receive a link to complete an online application. You will be asked to complete the online application and submit certain documents and a $100 application fee per person. Once your complete application has been received, it will take up to 30 days to be processed and you will be contacted with next steps.
  2. Our team will conduct a home visit as the final step in the approval process. After the home visit, we will communicate with you next steps about acceptance into our program.
  3. Approvals will be asked to sign a Partnership Agreement and can begin homeownership education through Habitat University. Each partner family is required to contribute at least 200 hours of sweat equity toward the home. Sweat-equity hours include homeownership education, financial education, and volunteer hours building your house and working on other Habitat homes. Classes are held at the Habitat main office on Tuesday evenings in addition to a few Saturdays.
  4. Addresses are selected. Upon selection of an address, a partner family will be asked to sign a purchase agreement and pay $2,000 for closing costs (closing costs subject to change).
  5. Time to make the house a home! Upon the completion of the home, you will sign closing documents and become a Habitat homeowner! After moving in, you will be expected to pay your mortgage on time every month, as well as keep up the maintenance on your home.
