Join us in this important work!  Volunteerism is a crucial piece of our mission. No matter your skillset or level of expertise, we have a place for you. No experience is necessary! Training: 

  • Habitat staff are trained in site-specific hazards, first-aid, CPR, and proper use of equipment and tools. 
  • Job-specific training for volunteers is provided on-site by a Habitat representative. 

Age Requirement for the Build Site: 

  • Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. To operate power tools and work on a ladder above 6 feet, volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Volunteer Build Site Details

    Volunteers must be 16+, and those using power tools or climbing ladders over 6 feet must be 18+. Safety guidelines and onsite supervision ensure every volunteer has a safe and productive experience. No construction experience needed – Habitat staff provide all training on-site!

    A typical build shift lasts 6-7 hours, including checkin, orientation, project work time, lunch, and wrapup. Potential projects include framing, siding, interior trim, landscaping, and more! Check the Volunteer Hub event when you sign up for details on what you might be doing.

    Closed-toe shoes are a requirement! Wear weatherappropriate clothes you can get dirtespecially since build sites can be muddy & we build in all kinds of weather! Habitat provides tools, safety gear (PPE), water, and lunch on the build site.

    All build opportunities are posted on Volunteer Hub, where individuals can create an account and register. Groups who want to volunteer together can complete the signup form and will be matched with the right build opportunity.  

Frequently Asked Questions

Indiana weather is going crazy! Is my volunteer day cancelled?

If the build site isdeemedunsafe prior to the start of the volunteer day,individuals will receive notifications via email, text, or their group leader contact (typically by early morning on the day of your shift).

The onsite Habitat Construction Team reserves the right to wrap up the volunteer day early if theweather conditions become unsafe. 

What if I can’t volunteer for the entire build day?

Please arrive on time and stay for the entirety of your shift for the best experience. This allows us to ensure that the planned project is completed, and the house remains on track for the family to move in at the planned date.

Where am I supposed to go for my volunteer shift on the build site?

The exact address of your build site should be in your confirmation and reminder emails you receive from “Habitat Volunteerism.”
