Investing in Neighbors: Marguerite Shepard's Commitment to Building Stronger Communities

Marguerite first connected with Habitat for Humanity in the early 2000’s when her administrative assistant shared that she was seeking affordable, stable housing. Wanting to help, Marguerite encouraged her to apply for Habitat’s homeownership program and soon they started building her house together.

The experience was so meaningful that when her assistant’s sister decided to pursue homeownership after seeing Habitat’s impact on her own family, Marguerite joined her on the build site as well.

Since then, Marguerite has remained a dedicated Habitat supporter, investing her time, talent, and resources to help more families achieve affordable homeownership in Central Indiana.

“It felt so good getting to help two single mothers find and achieve affordable housing. Seeing the pride on the owner’s and children’s faces as they got to have a space to call their own.”

One of the things Marguerite values most about Habitat is that homeownership goes beyond building houses. Through the program, homeowners participate in financial literacy education and support that helps set them up for long-term success. She especially enjoys seeing single mothers gain the tools and confidence to become first-time homeowners.

Earlier this year, Marguerite had the opportunity to volunteer at a panel build for the Devon Creek Community, a 10-home development in Indianapolis’ Washington Township. At 88 years old, Marguerite worried if she would be able to contribute as much as she once had.  Instead, she was pleased to find that everyone was supportive and assisted her along the way.

Her experience is a reminder that there are many ways to get involved with Habitat, regardless of age, experience, or skill level. Whether you join a build day, volunteer at a panel build, or make a financial contribution, every effort helps create opportunities for local families.

“Just give it a chance and be open to learn and meet new people. It will work well.”

For more than two decades, Marguerite has demonstrated how one connection can grow into a lifetime of impact. We are grateful for Marguerite’s commitment to Habitat and her belief that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home.

Like Marguerite, you can invest in your neighbors and help make homeownership possible. Get involved as a donor or volunteer.
