Who Are Our Homebuyers? Educators
“I’m grateful to Habitat because they helped me elevate,” she said. “I didn’t have to choose between the program and my career, which boosted my confidence, and that’s why I have the drive to accomplish whatever I set my mind to.”
Danika, a former teacher, is now a Dean of Human Resources for a local charter school. Danika Pettis credits Habitat for Humanity with helping her grow both personally and professionally.
Like many first-time homebuyers, Danika began her search out of necessity. She and her dog, Cookie, had outgrown their 500-square-foot apartment. Beyond needing more space, she searched for a home that provided long-term affordability and security. When she was younger, Danika first became familiar with Habitat through a family friend in Elkhart, Indiana. Knowing that she still had a goal of homeownership, her cousin encouraged her to apply in Indianapolis.
Despite her accomplishments as an educator, Danika was initially hesitant. As a single-income household living on a teacher’s salary and managing student loan debt, she wasn’t sure she would qualify. However, her professional background as a bank teller, personal loan officer, and certified financial counselor gave her the tools to budget effectively, reduce debt, and save—skills that ultimately helped her gain acceptance into the Habitat program.
“If I stepped out on faith and got a ‘yes,’ what other things can I get a ‘yes’ in?” she reflected.
From the start, Danika took immense pride in the journey, recognizing the hard work it took to stand in her home. “My home is something I’m protective of because I worked hard for it,” she shared. She recalls her volunteer time on build sites as empowering, giving her the confidence to ask questions and actively participate in construction. That hands-on experience taught her how to care for and maintain her home with quality and intention.
Now, nearly two years into homeownership, Danika and Cookie enjoy a space that’s more comfortable and welcoming to others. Christmas 2024 marked her first time hosting a family gathering—a milestone that felt both joyful and humbling. “It was a surreal moment,” she said. Having family over to eat, laugh, and play games brought memories of her late mother, who never had the opportunity to own a home. “I know she would be proud.”
Today, Danika describes her home as a place of proper rest and peace—a space where she can decompress, reflect, and recharge. She also credits homeownership with inspiring her to pursue new goals. “This taught me to go after my dreams,” she said. Since purchasing her home, Danika has continued to excel professionally. She is on track to complete her third master’s degree, in Butler’s Experiential Program for Preparing School Leaders, by December 2025.
“Home is the key to ownership and confidence,” she said. “It’s given me the freedom to take care of myself and enjoy life in ways I couldn’t before.”
