Building Futures for the Next Generation OR Education Starts at Home 

This year, dozens of Habitat families have shared how homeownership has positively impacted their children’s education: 

  • Children are sleeping better, focusing more, and taking pride in having a quiet space to study. 
  • Parents are pursuing job training and higher education, setting powerful examples of what’s possible. 
  • Families are building routines that lay the foundation for long-term academic success. 

A stable home does more than provide shelter; it creates the foundation for achievement, confidence, and opportunity. Through Greater Indy Habitat’s homeowner scholarship program, families can turn that stability into growth, particularly in pursuing higher education. For Bugashane Mugoovi, moving into a Habitat home in 2022 changed everything. Now a sophomore at Purdue University, he’s double majoring in UX Design and Game Development, and proudly the first in his family to attend college. He’s also a three-time recipient of the Habitat Homeowner Scholarship.  

“The scholarship is more than financial support,” he shared. “It’s a reminder that others believe in me.” As he paves a new path at Purdue, his younger siblings benefit from that same stable environment – more space, more joy, and a greater sense of peace. This is the ripple effect of affordable housing: it empowers families to dream bigger, study harder, and build a legacy rooted in opportunity.

Inadequate housing impacts health, especially the health of children. After moving into Habitat homes, asthma and allergies are two conditions that dramatically improve in children.

Stable, healthy housing is one of the most effective strategies for improving school performance in low-income children. In addition, over 70% of Habitat homeowners pursue or intend to pursue further education.

When people can find good housing that they can afford near their work, it improves our transportation system by decreasing congestion and reducing commuting costs.

71.5% of families reported a household member has started or completed higher education since becoming a Habitat homeowner.
