Super Build: A Super Success

Super Build 46, a partnership with the NFL and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis took place on Feb. 3 at the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center on the Arsenal Tech High School campus.   Since Super Bowl 36 in New Orleans in 2002, Habitat for Humanity and the NFL have had a national partnership to promote affordable homeownership opportunities to families in need within the cities that host the Super Bowl.

Each year the host city, the NFL and Habitat for Humanity determine a project that will provide a local impact for families and neighborhoods.  This year the partnership works very well within the context of the full work of the Legacy Project on the near Eastside of Indianapolis.

The wall panels for two homes that will be built later this year were constructed in the gym of the Legacy Center.   In total, we’ll provide 30 homeownership opportunities across Indianapolis in 2012.

This is Habitat for Humanity’s 25th year bringing God’s love through service to greater Indianapolis.  It couldn’t have been better timing to kick off the year with the Super Build.

Habitat is a volunteer-driven organization and today’s event is no exception.  Over 200 volunteers worked on the Super Build.  They included our two sponsors that brought financial support and volunteers:  Lead sponsor Firestone Building Products and Rexnord. We also had volunteers from the Super Bowl, our retired team of weekly volunteers, the Tiger Team and some notable volunteers also appeared.  Thank you to all that volunteered; we can’t do our work without you.

Thank you to the NFL players who came to encourage the volunteers and work on constructing the panels.  They included the following players:  Justin Snow and Ernie Sims from our local Indianapolis Colts, Marcus Dixon from the New York Jets, Chris Draft, a retired NFL player and Toby Gerhart with the Minnesota Vikings also were on hand.

In addition, thank you to Simona de Silvestra and James Hinchcliffe from the Indy Racing League who also attended the event and swung hammers all for a great cause.

On hand to help provide remarks and lift a wall panel were First Lady Daniels and Mayor Ballard.
